Changing a tire

1. Change a tire on your family car under the supervision of one of your parents. If your not sure how to do it read your vehicles owners manual.Write a type 3 writeup. FCA's: 1.Describe the steps you used in changing your tire. 2.Describe the safety components involved in changing a tire.3. Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Post by Monday 7/30

If you get a flat tire then these are the steps that you use:
  1. Find a safe place to pull over
  2. put your hazard lights on
  3. Put your car in park
  4. Put the emergency brake on
  5. Place the jack (where your owners manual tells you)
  6. Lift the jack high enough so that the bottom of the tire is just off the ground
  7. loosen lugnuts
  8. Then take them off
  9. Pull the tire off (put where spair tire was)
  10. Take your spair tire out
  11. Set the spair tire on
  12. Set lugnuts and tighten but not really hard
  13. Let the jack down
  14. Tighten the lugnuts all the way
  15. Put materials back in trunk
  16. Then your ready to go
  17. Signal and pull out

You should have a little car jack in your trunk if you get a spair so you can just get out and use those steps so you dont have to call someone or a service place and wait for them to get there. Its a lot faster.

2.Type 3 write up on insurance.FAC's: 1 Describe the following types of coverages: bodily injury liability, property damage liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured and under insured bodily and property damage liability, and the term deductible and how it relates to collision and comprehensive coverages. 2.Describe what the state of Vermont requires for automobile insurance. 3Correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, Post by Monday, 7/30.

Bodily injury liability-
Liability for physical harm or death of a person that ment or didn't mean to do it. it has it for if your sick or have a disease contracted by the injured person as a result of an injury.

Property damage liability- It pays for the car to get fixed, everything put back in that got totaled, and the repairs of the other car if it was your fault.

Collision- Insurance that pays for the repair or replacement of the policy owners car in the place of a crash.

Comprehensive- Like the same thing above but you have to pay a deductible, to get your car fixed.

Uninsured- Covers when property damage is sustained by a insured and the driver does not have insurance, but the limits of liability carried by the bad driver are not going to cover the damages.

under insured- Covers your car when property damage is sustained by a insured and the bad driver does not have insurance.

Vermonters on average paid about $786 in insurance in 2003, compared to the national average is about $914. A lot of people believe all these rates are fixed by insurance companies. State regulatory agencies, but they really discounted and competitive rates are available in Vermont, and Car Insurance.com is the best place to find them.

This is all I could find if you want me to add more I can just write a comment. I tried my best.

Crash cd

1. Watch the " Crash Cd ". Type 3 writing. FCA's: 1. give a complete summary of the four sites you visit in the cd( lawyer, police, doctor, school), 2.Tell who you turned out to be in the cd, 3.Give your view on the problems related to drinking/drugs and driving. Please post this by Sunday 7/29, 3:00 pm. If completed correctly this paper will take the place of your final exam.

Chelsey Gould
type 3

Lawyer- What I got from the lawyer was, there was 5 teenagers involved in the crash, The woman that hit the teenagers (Melissa) ran a red light, 4 teen girls died in the crash. The woman that hit them has had two previous DUI charges, and she is going to jail for a minimum of 60 if she gets charged for everything. The defense for Melissa said that they didn't see signs of her being drunk, and blood tests couldn't show anything because they didn't refrigerate them so they couldn't tell anything. The prosecution said she was drunk, and from the time of 12:00 pm and 2:50pm she already had 5 drinks. She was going 60mph when she hit the teens. Melissa also lied to police and tried to tell them that she wasn't drunk but her blood alchol level was .21 to .28, she got charged with 2nd degree murder.

School- There was a girl on a bike that got hit, she wasn't even in the car and now shes in the hospital, she had brain damage but she is getting released from the hospital soon. I just dont get how there was a biker that got hit because there was a drunk driver that hit a bunch of teens when they were leaving the beach and then they talked about a biker. So someone wasn't really in the case i think, that there was a few different stories.

Police- officer Hernandez, he was the first officer on the site. He said that there were two people that were laying on the ground and so wasn't the biker. He was 3 cars back and watched the whole thing happen and called in to have more officers come adn help him. They said that they didn't even know about one girl that they found when they got 2 of the 3 that were left in the car out. She was all tangled in the parts of the car, and she died on impact.

Doctor- The doctor said that they were not wearing seatbelts and if you wear a seatbelt its a higher chance you wont get hurt by 60%. They might have been smoking marijuana. The biker had a little memorie loss, the doctor said that she had to of hit her head off of something to cause the memorie loss. He also said that the driver was driving over the legal limit and she shouldn't have been driving. They all would of had a better chance of surviving if they had there seatbelts on, and were not driving while drinking and smoking.

I think that someone didn't hit the teens I think that there were 5 teens in a car that were drinking and smoking and they were going or soming from a party and when they ran the red light and turned that corner really fast the girl on the bike was there and ended up getting hit by the drunk driver. I was the biker in the cd. I think that people should not drink and drive at all I think that it is the worst thing that people can do and a lot of people think that there good drivers, and they maybe but you could be doing everything right and then from the middle of no where a person that is drinking and smoking while driving could hit you and maybe even kill you. It wouldn't be your fault and you didn't do anything wrong but its the other people that decite to be stupid and not think or let other people that are not drinking drive them home.

Assingment 7/26

Chelsey Gould
Type 2
due 7/26
1. List 8 areas where it is illegal to pass another vehicle and give a reason why you think it is unsafe to pass in these areas. This is a type 2 writing.

  1. On a hill- It is not safe to pass on a hill because you cant see what is on the other side and that could cause a accident.
  2. On a curve- It's like a hill because you cant see what is around the corner, and if theres a car coming then you caould hit them head on.
  3. At in intersection- It's not safe to pass at in intersection because you see a lot of police shows and things of people passing at in intersection and if theres a car or a truck or anything then there could come from the middle of no where and hit you on the side.
  4. At a rail road crossing- I think that this is the worsed place anyone could pass because if you go to pass someone and a train is coming but you think you have enough time, well you really dont trains are going faster then you think, and you could get hit by a train, and theres not really anyway that you could live through that.
  5. Tunnels- because something could be coming, and you dont have enough time to pass the right way.
  6. Bridges- Because if your going to pass and then you see another car coming you would have to swerve and you would go off the bridge, or hit the other car.
  7. No passing zones- Because if its a no passing zone then there telling you that it is really unsafe to pass so if you do pass on a no passsing zone and a cop sees you then you will get a ticket.
  8. On coming traffic is present- Thats kind of commen sence but if theres a car that you think is really far ahead and you think that you have time to pass you dont, well maybe you do but you wont be able to pass safely and you have a good chance of getting hit head on by the other car.

2. Using the power point 9.02 I would like you to explain the time and space needs for passing another vehicle. You are traveling at 60 mph and the car you are about to pass is going 40 mph. you will need to multiply each speed by 1.5 in order to find the feet per second that each car is traveling. Please explain how long it will take you to pass the vehicle, the number of feet that you will travel in each of the three parts of the passing maneuver. the total feet and time it will take, and compare that to the length of a football field which is 300 feet long. This is a type 2 writing. Remember to use the 9.02 power point to find the information you will need to solve the question.

If your going 60mph then that means your traveling 90 feet per second, If the car your passing is going 40mph then there traveling at 60 feet per second. It will take 10 seconds to pass the other car. I will be traveling 90 feet per second, it will take 15 seconds to pass the car, and it will be the lengh of 3 football fields.

3. Find three news articles. Post the information along with your opinion of the situation. This is a type 1 writing.

Traffic flagger lodged for alcohol detoxPublished: Wednesday, July 25, 2007Free Press Staff ReportWARREN -- A traffic flagger working at a bridge construction project in Warren was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with reckless endangerment after Vermont State Police said they found him "extremely intoxicated" and asleep in a vehicle near the work site. John Patrick Green, 42, of Waterbury was taken into custody and lodged at an alcohol detoxification unit at the Dale Correctional Facility following the incident, according to police. The police found Green in his car while responding to a report that a "suspicious man" had been seen wandering near residences in Warren village.Witnesses claimed Green had been directing vehicles over a one-lane bridge on Brook Road and around construction equipment at the work site before the arrival of the police, a Vermont State Police news release said.

I think this is totally not right at all. If you have a good job like that then you dont need to drink nad if your going to drink then they can do it when they get out of work. There is no reason to drink before or during your job. There just a flagger you just have to stand there and flip a sign over and it doesn't seem like a big deal but it really is what if this guy that was drunk at work had the sign the wrong way and it said slow, there could be a family that went and hit someone head on becasue this guy wasn't paying attention and he was drunk.

2)Bus Passengers May Have Been Exposed To TB
Passenger Of May 5 Vermont Transit Co. Bus May Have Tuberculosis
POSTED: 3:53 pm EDT July 24, 2007
UPDATED: 5:27 pm EDT July 24, 2007

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Passengers on a May 5 bus from Boston to Montreal may have been exposed to tuberculosis, health officials in Vermont and Massachusetts said Tuesday.
At least some people on the Vermont Transit Co. trip were being notified that another passenger on the bus may have had the disease.
"We had an alert from the Boston, Massachusetts, Department of Health," said Chris Andreasson, general manager of Vermont Transit Co. Inc. "The only concern they had was for somebody that sat next to passenger for a long period of time."

I think that this is a really bad subject because if people have things like this then if they know they shouldn't go in places like the bus, so things dont happen like this. I think that this is really sad because a lot of the people on the bus dont deserve to get this and now they have to go and get shots and things like that just because they had to ride the bus to get somewhere they had to be.

3) Police: Boy, 15, Waved Gun At Group of Children
POSTED: 5:18 pm EDT July 24, 2007
UPDATED: 6:10 pm EDT July 24, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Police arrested a 15-year-old boy in Manchester after a group of children complained that he waved a gun at them.
The teenager was arrested Monday and charged with reckless conduct, falsifying evidence, resisting arrest and tobacco possession. Police said they were not able to find a gun immediately.

I think this kid should get in trouble because no matter how mad you are you should never put a gun fake or not to anyone. If I was the childs parents then they would be grounded for a really long time. This is why I dont think that video games should have all of the killing and shoting it has these days. It makes kids so they think they can kill people or shoot people and thats not right at all.

3.Type 2 writing: Explain the benefits of keeping a 4 second following distance. Use power point presentation 7.03 to help you with this assignment. Post assignment by Sunday ,7/22.

Its good to use the 4 second following distance so if the person in front of you stops very fast you have 4 seconds to try to stop. If your at in intersection its good so if the person in front of you is driving a standard if they try to go they might roll back a little bit and if you use the 4 second following distance then you have a good chance they wont hit you.

No serious injuries after two-car crash in Chesterfield
Reformer.com

Thursday, July 19CHESTERFIELD, N.H. -- A Bedford woman was sent to the hospital after a two-car crash at the intersection of Routes 9 and 63 in Chesterfield, Wednesday.
Teresa Geib, 43, had to be extracted from her 2007 Honda Civic using the Jaws of Life. Both the front and back driver's side door had to be removed, according to Chesterfield Police Lt. Duane Chickering.
Geib was transported to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene with injuries that were not life-threatening, Chickering said.
According to Chickering, Geib was driving west on Route 9 with her husband Eric, when the car of George Idelkope, 54, of Chesterfield, heading north on Route 63 across Route 9, hit the driver's side of the Geib car, and eventually came to a stop down a bank 30 feet from the roadway.
Neither Idelkope nor Eric Geib were hurt in the collision. "All parties were wearing seat belts," Chickering said. He also said due to the deployment of air bags in the Geib car, injuries were likely reduced.
Responding to the scene were Chesterfield police, fire and rescue, Spofford Rescue and the Keene Fire Department. Traffic was slowed in both lanes of Route 9, but continued to move. Traffic along the end of Route 63 to the south of Route 9 was halted while the scene was cleaned up. Both cars were towed from the scene.

I think this has to do with what were talking about because it has to do with the POT and LOS restrictions. The car should of been able to see the other car and predicted what they were going to do and try to do something to avoid the crash.

2)Concrete Smashes Cars On Route 495
(WBZ) LOWELL Chunks of concrete hit as many as four cars on Route 495 North in Lowell late Wednesday night. It happened near the Boylston Street overpass between Exits 37 and 38 around 11 p.m. State and Lowell police say they don't know if it was construction debris falling from the bridge or an act of vandalism.A family from Maine was in the area at that time when concrete shattered the window of their SUV. The driver had to have shattered glass washed out of his eyes.Other cars were hit on the hood and doors by debris. There were no serious injuries.Police looked at the overpass, but saw no signs of crumbling.A double high chain link fence is already on the bridge to make it difficult for people to launch debris on the highway.

This is about traffic safety. you should be looking for things that could cause problems and try to use the IPDE process. This could have done a lot more damage then it did.

3)Speeding Up I-93 Expansion Could Hurt Other Roads

(WBZ) CONCORD, N.H. While crews work to expand one of our busiest highways, the plan for I-93 in New Hampshire is changing. The original idea called for four lanes in each direction along the 20 mile stretch from Salem to Manchester with a 2012 completion date. The project came with a $750 million price tag.The new proposal by Transportation Commissioner Charles O'Leary calls for widening the roadway between the state line and exit 3 in Windham, and reworking exit 5.These projects will likely be completed in three years."We propose to do it in a manor that will maintain a reasonable flow of traffic, a safe flow of traffic, not only for the commuters but for the tourists," said O'Leary. But the situation isn't so rosy for other roads.O'Leary said more than 60 other projects must be scaled back or cut."We've recognized there has been rampant inflation in construction. A forty-five percent increase in the last three years," said O'Leary. The expansion project is on hold pending a lawsuit filed by some conservation groups. They want a rail plan required as part of the project. The stretch of I-93 from Salem to Manchester was built to accomodate more than 70,000 cars a day. It currently handles about 100,000 vehicles.
This is also traffic safety, They should have a different road that people can drive on when there doing all of these things on the roads. Its a hazard because people have to stop a lot and wait for other people to go. It also wastes your gas because you have to stop and go all the time. There is a better chance of crashes also.

Seat belts can save lives

Seat belts can save livesPublished June 27th, 2007 in Social, Awareness and Traffic speed. Tags: , , , , , , , .
40,000 people die each year in car accidents. They all say that they “drive carefully” or “nothing will happen”, “just going few meters”. You only need a second of distraction for anything to be happening. Car accidents kill many innocent people just because we do not use to wear seat belts.

Howstuffworks "How Seatbelts Work"
According to a research report from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, seatbelts save approximately 13,000 lives in the United States each year. Furthermore, the NHTSA estimates that 7,000 U.S. car accident fatalities would have been avoided if the victims had been wearing belts.
While seatbelts do occasionally contribute to serious injury or death, nearly all safety experts agree that buckling up dramatically increases your chances of surviving an accident. According to the NHTSA, seatbelts reduce the risk of death for a front seat car occupant by about 50 percent.
When you think about it, this is absolutely amazing: How can a piece of fabric end up being the difference between life and death? What does it actually do? In this article, we'll examine the technology of seatbelts to see why they are one of the most important technologies in any car.

Child Passenger Safety Laws
Provisions in Vermont Law are often what guide parents and other caregivers when they are making decisions on how to most safely transport their children.
Current law outlines inadequate protection for children, especially those between the ages of 5 and 8 years. Children 5 – 8 years old have outgrown child car seats but are not big enough for the car’s seatbelts to fit them or to adequately protect them in the event of a car crash. A booster seat is needed for these children to raise them up so the car’s seat belts fit them properly. This past session, the Legislature improved the law, thereby safeguarding children and giving parents proper guidance.
The new law ( effective January 1, 2004) stipulates that no person shall operate a motor vehicle, other than a type I school bus, in this state upon a public highway unless every occupant under age 16 is properly restrained in a federally approved child passenger restraining system as defined in 49 C.F.R. § 571.213 (1993) or a federally-approved safety belt, as follows:
All children under the age of one, and all children weighing less than 20 pounds, regardless of age, shall be restrained in a rear-facing position, properly secured in a federally-approved child passenger restraining system, which shall not be installed in front of an active air bag;
A child weighing more than 20 pounds, and who is one year of age or older and under the age of eight years, shall be restrained in a child passenger restraining system (This means convertible, combination and booster child safety seats); and
A child eight through 15 years of age shall be restrained in a safety belt system or a child passenger restraining system.
Penalties for failing to follow the child passenger safety laws: The fine is $25.00 for the first offense, $50.00 for the second and $100.00 for the third offense. No points will be assessed to the license of the driver.
Medical exemptions were repealed, as improvements in car seat technology have eliminated the need for any exemptions. Contact your local pediatrician or the number below to learn more.

1) 5 Injured In School Bus, Truck Collision

Cause Of Crash Under Investigation

POSTED: 3:08 pm EDT July 11, 2007
UPDATED: 6:52 pm EDT July 11, 2007

Officials are investigating a crash involving a school bus and a pickup truck in Haverhill. The crash happened on Groveland Street near Boardman Street at about 2:30 p.m. when a small school bus tried to avoid an oncoming pickup truck that crossed the median, a NewsCenter 5 photographer at the scene said. The driver and two students on the bus suffered minor injuries, but the two people in the truck were seriously injured. All five people were brought to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.

It relates to what were learning about because we are learning about collisions that happen at intersections and this would relate. The truck was at fault, The bus tried to get out of the way but the truck was in the same lane. The bus driver was able to use the IPDE process because they identified a problem, they predicted that the truck was going to go in there path of travel, the bus driver decided that he/or she would try to swerve to avoid the truck, the bus driver executed and moved to the other side of the road. People think that they're good drivers but its not your driving it could be other peoples driving.

2)
Raise Pike Tolls During Rush Hour?

Discussion Started: 06-20-2007, 1:21 PM

The state is considering a new plan that could have drivers paying more for a faster commute on the Mass Pike. The plan includes raising tolls during rush hour, meaning all commuters would have to pay a premium to drive the pike during peak hours and expanding express lanes to allow Fast Lane users to drive through at highway speeds.

Tolls are a really bad spot and a high risk place to get hit. If they make more I think that it will be a lot better because if there's more lanes then cars can spread out so it takes less time to get through them. There will be less collisions, because they will have more room.

One Dead, One Hospitalized After I-91 Crash

POSTED: 3:11 pm EDT July 2, 2007
UPDATED: 4:27 pm EDT July 2, 2007
One person is dead and another was airlifted to a hospital after a car went into the median on Interstate 91 in Brattleboro and flipped onto its roof Monday.Authorities said the passenger was declared dead at the scene, which occurred on the Brattleboro-Dummerston town line. The driver of the car was taken by helicopter to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

This is related to what we are learning about because we are learning about crashes. I think that this is really scary and I hope that it wasn't the drivers fault. It sounds like the driver wasn't using the right skills. If they were using the right skills then they more then likely wouldn't have flipped the car unless they turned the wheel really fast while they were speeding.

Assignment due 7/11

Graduated licensing-
2. Your assignment is to write a type 3 paper on "Graduated Licensing". Your FCA's are: 1) explain what the Vermont Graduated License Law is all about, 2) Express in your own words how you feel about the law and would you suggest any changes to the law, 3) correct spelling and grammar. Click on the link below and use the site to do your paper. This paper should be posted by Wednesday, 7/11/07.

Graduated Licensing is a law that requires teens 15 to 18 to learn to drive in stages. It's used for saving lives and reducing injuries.
Stage 1- Learner's permit- You have to be 15, You have to have it for a year before you can get your license, You can only drive if your with a parent, driver ed teacher, or someone 25 with a license.
Stage 2- Juniors Operator's License- For 16 or 17 years of age, you have to pass drivers, 40 hours of practice driving, clean drivers record for 6 months, pass road test, you can not have more people then seat belts, you can't drive for a job, first 3 months you can only drive alone or with the people you can drive with when you have your permit, after 3 months you can have family, and 6 months you can have anyone you want with you.
Stage 3- Operators License- You can get this when your 18.

Part 2- I think that these laws are good because if you are under 16, and you don't take a class then you have no experience. They would cause more problems on the road and more people would die a year. I think that it's good that you can't have anyone in the car for 6 months because that gives you time to focus on the things you just learned in drivers ed, and you're not distracted by your friends. Graduated licensing gives teens more time to get good habits. I also think it's good that you have to be 15 to get a permit because if you were any younger then you wouldn't be as mature. You would do whatever you wanted and that wouldn't be good at all. I think it's good that you have to have 40 hours of driving practice because that gives you a lot more time to get to know the habits, so that you don't have to think about them they just happen. Later on you can have your friends in the car and still do everything the right way and not get in big trouble or get killed.

Stolen pickup truck strikes house in St. Albans

Published: Monday, June 25, 2007
Vermont State Police in St. Albans are searching for the operator of an stolen pickup truck that careened into a house on Lake Street Sunday night.

Police said alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident in which the driver, possibly a 15-year-old-juvenile, and two occupants fled after driving the late model red Ford pickup through a yard and into 3 Lake St., police said.

A witness to the accident told troopers that the pickup was driving south on River Street at a high rate of speed when it turned onto Lake Street and veered out of control, crossing a neighbor's yard before striking the house, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage.

Police later learned the truck was stolen from a local auto repair shop.

Reflection-
Everything that the driver did was wrong.
  • Didn't have a license
  • Stole the car
  • He was 15
  • He was drinking
  • He left the scene
  • Crashed into a house
  • $5,000 dollars in damages
He obviously didn't know how to drive because he was out of control the whole time that he was driving. He wasn't using target areas because he was going all over the road. He wasn't maintaining balance in the car because he was careening around the corners. There was to much roll so it made him go off the road. He saw the house but he didn't use the brakes to stop and just went right into the house. His reaction time wasn't right because he had been drinking so he didn't know what he was doing at the time. If they catch the kid that did it they shouldn't let him get his license for a long time and make him go to AA meetings. He should do community service for the people that owned the house and pay for the damages. He should also have to help at the body shop because he took the car from there.

Assignment due 6/30

Depending on the seriousness of the moving violation you can get 2,3,4,5,or 10 points taking off your licence. The points stay on your licence for two years then they take them off 2 years on the day you got the points. Your licence will get taken away if you get 10 points on your licence in a 2 year period.
  • 10 days for getting 10 points
  • 30 days for getting 15 points
  • 90 days for getting 20 points
  • If there's a fatality you lose your licence for a year
For example:
2 points for illegal turning at intersections.
3 points for following to closely
4 points for failure to yield to pedestrians
5 points for passing a school bus
10 points for reckless driving

I think its a good system if it gets the people that don't follow these rules are off the road. I think it's good so that people aren't doing whatever they want so that a lot of people get hurt and or killed. The point system only works if the people get caught, if they don't then they think that they can do it all the time and then a lot of bad things happen. It seems to me that the only reason people get tickets and get pulled over is for speeding, there's a lot worse things that could happen then speeding.
