BENNINGTON -- The Department of Motor Vehicles said Wednesday that a truck stopped on the Bennington Bypass was leaking hazardous material, the third such find around the state in the past two days.

According to the department, Motor Vehicles inspectors stopped three trucks over the past two days that were either leaking hazardous material or waste fluids. The leaks were detected at three separate safety checkpoints in Randolph, Springfield and Bennington. The truck stopped in Springfield presumably traveled through a portion of Windham County.

"The safety checkpoints were routine and part of the DMV's truck safety inspection efforts," said DMV Commissioner Bonnie Rutledge. "We constantly conduct truck safety inspections to not only monitor and maintain truck safety, but to protect both the traveling public and the environment as well."
